Active and intelligent packaging solutions – Summer School

Dates: 12 th – 16 th June 2017
Venue: Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland

The summer school took place at Tampere University of Technology, and was organised by the research group of Paper Converting and Packaging Technology. Summer school brought together researchers and post-graduate students from over ten different countries across Europe delivering an introduction to active and intelligent packaging and current research themes relating to these packaging solutions. In addition to comprehensive lectures, researchers also had a chance to participate in an extrusion coating trial at TUT’s unique pilot line and some laboratory exercises relating to the analysis of packaging materials. Furthermore, the group visited Metsä Board TAKO mill in the city centre of Tampere.

The summer school covered topics like:

  • Packaging materials and their production
  • Active and intelligent packaging solutions (AIP)
  • Preservation of food with AIP
  • Potential of nanocellulose for AIP
  • Food contact legislation and migration
  • Multisensory evaluation of AIP
  • Sustainability and LCA

FEEDBACK:

  • As for the training school, I found it to be very interesting content-wise as the presentations really gave a good update on the possibilities of active and intelligent packaging, as well as how it can be applied. The lab tour also really helped it come alive! I was expecting to be doing a little more by ourselves since they were called practical work in the invitation to the summer school, however. The thing I enjoyed most was to meet so many new people who are working on the same topics, and strengthening bonds with those people I already knew. Although there has not been any concrete results from it in terms of new collaborations, there certainly are some new opportunities to form them in case we want to start new projects on this topic in the (near) future. • Feedback for COST Summer School in June: of course, positive! The content was interesting and relevant for my research interests, especially the practical part of the workshop was very useful! I got new contacts with other COST participants (from Spain, Portugal, Serbia, Israel, Greece, Turkey etc.); thank you also for organizers for very well organized event and for selection of interesting and experienced speakers!
