More details: Indicator contains liquid which is just next to the barcode. Liquid reacts with temperature changes during transportation and storage. If temperature has increased too high, liquid expands and covers a part of the barcode, Thus, the code cannot be read on the cashier, which prevents selling of possibly spoiled products.
LIDL Finaland says that this procedure allows better monitoring of the cold chain and improves product safety.
